Hepatobiliary Scan (HIDA)

  1. Evaluation of cholecystitis, inflammation of gallbladder, cystic or common bile ducts.

  2. Evaluation of cholelithiasis, obstruction.

  3. Evaluation for biliary disknesia, sphineter of Oddi spasm and congenital anomalies.

  4. Evaluation after gallbladder surgery for suspected leakage.

  1. Ensure patient NPO 4-6 hours before exam.

  2. Explain the procedure; usually runs 1 hour but baseline studies can go as long as 4 hours with up to 24 hours delay required on some instances.
